"Scootle"

Dear Colleague,

Mary (one of our CRTs) asked me to find out if CRTs were able to access "Scootle", which is usually only accessed via a school registered with Education Services Australia.
.
(N.B. "Scootle" is a valuable digital resource for teachers.)

Anyway, after contacting "Education Services Australia", I discovered that CRTs are able to register to use "Scootle" by emailing  digital.content@edumail.vic.gov.au

If you have a spare minute, give it a go, and a special "thank you" to Mary for bringing it to my attention.

Explore the following website!

BBC Skillswise-  http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise

It is definitely worth a look. It contains some great information, fact sheets and quizzes for all ages. (The only problem is that the currency is not Australian.)

You may find these useful! (Thanks Viv)

MyVIT

(A message from Dawn Colcott - Manager, Professional Learning, Victorian Institute of Teaching)

Teachers are being invited to create their teacher portal now on the Institute’s website. This is happening in a staggered fashion with teachers being sent the invitation. When a teacher receives the email from the VIT, they can click on the link and set up their account (portal) When they have set up the portal, they can access their registration details, find forms and record PD.

Ideas for Sharing! (from our recent Rowville CRT Network get-together)

- "BAND-AIDS"  by Shel Silverstein. Contact me if you would like a copy of the poem and figure outline. (This poem can be used in many different ways. A great idea from Lynne Jefferies.)

- "If I were a stone: I could help to build a wall, I could be a place for frogs to sit, I could be used to skim the still water of a lake or I could help to build a cairn. What else could I do? " (Creative Writing idea from Emily Rose. Great idea Emily.)

- "Hailstones and Halibut Bones" - Easy to find on the web. (Thank you for reminding us about these amazing poems Helen Sanders)

- Physical Education - To make sure that girls and boys have equal opportunity at different activities, assign different coloured balls to your students. Then, you can call on specific colours to take part in certain activities. (Thank you Brenda Cox.)

- Remember to allow your students a "5-minute break" when you can see that they are losing focus. This will help them to get back on track. (Thank you Lucy Chieng.)

- "Positive Speak!" - works wonders with all students. (Thank you for reminding us Renee Head.)

- Show a genuine interest in the students; listen to their stories and allow them to be creative. (Good reminders also. Thank you Mun Yee Goh.)

- Always take a newspaper along with you. You can give each student a page and ask individual students, partners or small groups to: locate specific parts of speech or "A" words etc (colour code them, circle them, underline them etc.), locate a word starting with each letter of the alphabet (if they can't find one, then they can create their own words using different letters from words on the page) or create a story using some of the words on the page (cut them out and paste them on a separate piece of paper). (Thank you to my sister Joanne, who is a regular CRT, who gave me this great idea.)

- "If I were an ADJECTIVE!" - Creative writing - What would you describe? Use photos, cut-out pictures from magazines as writing stimulus.
- "What I love about my life!" - Creative writing - Getting to know the students in your class. (Tell the students what you love about your life too.)
- Physical Education - Take a stopwatch with you. Time different activities to encourage individual PBs, partner and group participation.

Online Relief Teacher Directory - Find a CRT!

Find a CRT ~ The online Relief Teacher Directory:  www.findacrt.com.au
Find a CRT  is the online Relief Teacher Directory designed to connect available CRTs with local Principals and Schools, to fill their casual relief teaching job vacancies.

After registering with Find a CRT, relief teachers set up their personal Directory Listing to display for Principals and Schools, simply by:
1. Selecting their Teaching Categories and
2. Setting the Postcodes of the areas they are willing to travel to for work

As an optional extra, relief teachers can also choose to post their CV online for Principals and Schools to access.

CRTs' names are then automatically displayed on the CRT Directory, based firstly on a Postcode match to Principals and Schools searching in any area where the CRT has elected they are willing to travel to for casual teaching work.

Find a CRT is currently free for relief teachers to register until December 2011, while continuing work on the database is undertaken for both CRTs and Schools throughout Australia.  In the future relief teachers can expect to pay only a minimal annual registration fee of $25.00 to maintain their personal listing on the directory.
